Abstract

Purpose: to evaluate the clinical and radiographic outcomes of two biological approaches (Silver Modified Atraumatic Restorative Technique (SMART) and Hall Technique (HT)) versus the conventional approach for caries management in primary molars. Materials and Methods: A total of 90 healthy children ranging from 4 -8 years old of both sexes, were selected for this study after they met inclusion criteria. The patients were allocated to one of three groups, thirty patients for each group. The follow up periods were 1, 3 and 6 months for clinical evaluation. Periapical radiographs were taken at 1, 3 and 6 months recall visits. Results: The results showed no statistically significant difference between groups in clinical and radiographic success at 1and 3 months. In 6 months, there was statistically significant difference between groups in radiographic success but no significant difference clinically. The HT group had higher success rate ((100%) clinically and radiographically) followed by SMART group ((86.7%) clinically and (93.3%) radiographically), then the conventional approach group ((80%) clinically and radiographically). Pairwise comparisons showed that the Hall group had a significantly higher number of successful cases than conventional group (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Both SMART and HT are effective approaches for managing carious primary molars and can be used as alternatives to conventional approach.
