Abstract

Purpose: To evaluate the effect of aging on marginal adaptation and fracture resistance of two CAD/CAM designs and ceramic materials to restore endodontically treated premolars. Materials and Methods: Forty extracted upper second premolars were collected (single rooted, single canal), cleaned and endodontically treated, then divided into 2 main groups (n=20) each having a different restoration design. Group I (fiber-post, composite core, and crown), Group II (endocrowns). Preparations were done according to each restoration design guidance. Each group was divided into 2 subgroups (n=10) according to the used material; Vita Enamic (E), Vita Suprinity(S); Subgroups IE, IIE and IS, IIS respectively. Prepared teeth were scanned, different restoration designs were milled, finished, then cemented on their respective preparations. Samples of each subgroup were divided into 2 divisions (n=5). Division (A): Aged and division (N): Non-aged. Marginal adaptation records were measured taken before and after aging for both divisions followed by fracture resistance test. Results: Aging had no significant effect on marginal gap of all samples irrelevant of the material & design. Subgroup (E) showed significantly lower marginal adaptation compared to subgroup (S). On the other hand, aging significantly decreased fracture resistance of both groups; group (I) recorded significantly higher fracture resistance than group 2. There were insignificant fracture resistance results among tested divisions. Conclusion: Aging has no drastic effect on marginal adaptation of both groups. Irrelevant of the material used, however, fracture resistance was decreased for both groups and sup groups after aging.
