Abstract

Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of different surface treatments on the translucency of ultra-translucent zirconia with different thicknesses. Material and Methods: A total of ninety-six ultra-translucent zirconia discs (KATANA UTML) were designed and constructed using CAD/ CAM machine. Specimens were divided into 3 main groups (n=32) according to thickness; (0.3, 0.5, and 1.5). Each group was further subdivided into 4 subgroups (n=8) according to the type of surface treatment used; Group I: control group, Group II: treated with 50 µm AL2O3 sandblasting, Group III: treated with surface grinding, and Group IV: treated with laser CO2. The translucency was measured with a spectrophotometer. The obtained values were tabulated and statistically analyzed. Results: ANOVA test revealed a statistically significant difference in the translucency under the effect of different types of surface treatments within group I samples (0.3 mm) and within group II samples (0.5 mm) (p=0.00), Also revealed that there was no statistically significant difference within group III samples (1.5 mm). Conclusion: Different surface treatments applied on 0.3 mm and 0.5mm thickness affected on the translucency of KATANA UTML zirconia. Different surface treatments applied on 1.5mm thickness had no significant effect on the translucency of KATANA UTML zirconia.
